I picked a bouquet of lilacs for my wife who placed them in a pitcher where the smell flows throughout the house. I think of the generations of my family who have done the same with the ancestors of these particular lilacs. Life is connected.

There are a couple of places on the mountain that stay moist a little longer and provide passersby with the beautiful pink flowers of the mountain laurel. I consider them to be a special gift from Nature that few may pause to appreciate.

Small Flower, Large Presence

The lilies-of-the-valley are a small very invasive flower that spreads easily. Its small white bloom has a large thick smell that I find very pleasing. They remind me of people that quietly live a positive life but are creating a large presence.

Hiding in the Lilacs

A robin caught my eye as it disappeared into a lilac bush with a worm in its mouth. I investigated from a distance and discovered a large nest hidden in the leaves. I look forward to watching the young birds mature and take flight.

Memorial Day provides an opportunity to remember and honor all the veterans that have served this country. My first memories of my father were when he got off the train in his army uniform. Now, lilacs help bring those memories back.
